The Key 1

The Key 1 introduces youth and children’s leaders and volunteers to some of the values and principles in youth and children’s work and how to apply them in their work and ministry. By attending the three sessions, delegates will hopefully be more passionate, assured and inspired in their work and ministry.


The Aims

The core aims of the sessions are:

  • To reflect on why they work with children or young people
  • Explore learning styles, programme planning and resources
  • Be aware of the basics in safeguarding and good practice

The Key has been designed to be delivered to small and large groups. Each session lasts for approximately 2 hours and can be delivered on three separate occasions or as a full day.

Aim of the session:
To help those who work with children and young people discover the value, impact and joys of being involved in youth and children’s work.

Learning outcomes:

  • To recognise the importance of priorities and values in youth and children’s work
  • To gain a deeper understanding of the focus/mission of their work
  • To develop an understanding of the value of reflecting on their work
  • To recognise the need to be valued and supported in their role

Aim of the session:
To help those who work with children and young people to develop a better understanding of different learning styles and to enable them to begin planning programmes that accommodate different learning needs.

Learning outcomes:

  • To identify how learning styles differ and how they are influenced by environment and culture
  • To begin to incorporate a variety of learning styles into programme planning
  • To identify resources needed when planning a programme
  • To develop the practice of reflecting on and evaluating sessions


Aim of the session:
To help those who work with children and young people to have a better understanding of how to work more safely and how to handle problems or issues which may arise in the course of the work.

Learning outcomes:

  • To be able to identify hazards and reduce the risks in an environment where work is carried out with children/young people
  • To gain an overview of good practice when working with children/young people
  • To understand categories of abuse
  • To know the basic procedure to follow if you suspect abuse or a child or young person discloses abuse to you
